Charles Jouas  (1866 - 1942)


A drawer, painter and illustratorr who was born in Paris. His father died young so he decided himself which direction to give. He was self educated as an artist and later went to work for several workshops in Paris. He painted, worked on the decors for the opera and searched for a deeper level in art then just techniqual virtuosity. On 1896 he finished an album with aquarelles as illustration for "Le Maroc" by Pierre Loti. He presented himself to the great bibliophile and editor Beraldi who recognized his talent and have him several commissions. He went to Luchon in the French Pyrenees and illustrated a major work on the region so important for beraldi. Back in Paris he learned to engrave and became president of the section of engraving of the Société nationale des beaux-arts. He exposed in galleries between 1915 and 1920 and work of him found it's way to major museum in France. Latest romanticus before the modern art.Friend of Edgar Chahine.
