Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1647)
Master of the Burin. His mannerism was highly influenced by Spranger but after a journey to Italy he developed it to a less exaggerated form. His designs where engraved, often with even more skill by his contemporain like Jan Saenredam and Jacob Matham.

Subject: Minerva at Envy's cave, from Ovids Metamorphoses
Technical: Old laid paper cut outside plate border leaving small margins
Reference: "The three series of the metamorphoses, making a total of 52 engravings whose design occupied Goltzius about 1589." (Shoaf and Turner). , see Bartsch, 3: 313-338.
Interest: These are high quality smaller scale version made by De Passe probably around 1604.
