15 thC. :  Delbecq-Schreiber Passion Series

Master of Delft                       Master of  Virgo inter Virgines                  Henrick Eckert van Homberch

This one of the rarest and earliest passion series from the Low Countries.
estimated date of the woodcuts: 1475-1490

DELBECQ-SCHREIBER PASSION

The name of the woodcuts is given to the former collectors Jean-Baptiste Delbecq (1833) sold to Ludwig Schreiber (1890) in whom's collection the first example of this work was discovered. It is a series of 20 woodcuts all but one from the Passion who where pasted on one side of a handwritten manuscript. This example is in the collection of the Royal Library in Brussels since the beginning of the 20 century. Paul Heitz dates the manuscript around 1490. Dr Jan Descamps put's 1475 forward as more plausible dating.

After this first discovery more examples of the woodcut's were found and noted publishers are Jansz. Van Woerden, 6 March 1517 and Henrich Eckert van Homberch, 18 Januari 1518. At some point the series were expanded and reworked.

So these are very early  and rare woodcuts, designed and made in woodcut between 1475-1490 and printed in the early 15th century by a limited circle of publishers.

Present are a group of  17 uniform woodcuts trimmed on the borderline 1505 (?)  augmented with 2 woodcuts each on a full sheet containing one in double, so 19 out of the series of 20 are present.

Important valuable work, you will hardly find a selection like this on the market.
